Health psychologists understand the relationship between environmental, behavioural and psychological factors and physical health and illness, practice in health promotion and clinical health, apply a biopsychosocial framework.

Health psychology is to promote and maintain health, prevent and treat illness from a psychological perspective, define the behavioural and psychological correlates of illness (epidemiology, research and intervention), improve the health care system and health policy. Clinical psychologists generally deal with psychological distress and dysfunction, health psychologists deal with physical illness as well as health promotion. Can deal with wellbeing, stress, coping and illness, stress management, problems with addiction, health behaviour and behaviour change, health promotion, the use and misuse of medical services, pain and discomfort, pain management, adjusting to terminal illness.

Psychiatric disorders are commonly seen in those with AIDS.
